Description:
From Lewis and Clark to present day, discover how Downtown Missoula grew from a 19th century trading post into a lively cultural hub. This hour and a half-guided walking tour leads you through the city’s historic downtown, where architectural landmarks like the Florence Hotel reveal Missoula’s evolution from railroad center to automobile era. You’ll hear stories of early power players Higgins & Hammond, whose rivalry shaped the city’s growth.
Cross the Clark Fork River for views of Brennan’s Wave and Milwaukee Road Depot, then dip into Missoula’s rowdier past with tales of infamous madam Mary “Mother” Gleim. The tour concludes at the restored Missoula Mercantile—now part of the Residence Inn—where historical artifacts and artwork bring the city’s past to life.
Guided tours are: Monday, Thursday, and Friday at 11 am in the summer months. Can't make the guided tour work? History and Art audio tours available year-round.
