Some of the Friendliest Skiing in the West
The warmth of Lookout Pass isn’t just in the cozy lodge or the crackling fire; it’s in the friendly faces who make every day special. Here, the staff does more than sell lift tickets and hand out rental gear—they create an inviting environment. Longtime ski instructor Jenka Moon is one of those friendly faces. “I think it’s always been that go-to where it’s a little more affordable than some of the other ski hills, and it has that warmth and inviting appeal to it,” Jenka reflected. For visitors, it’s easy to feel like part of the family, welcomed by the genuine people who bring the mountain to life.
At the heart of Lookout Pass is its free ski school for kids, a beloved program that’s been drawing families to the slopes for years. Imagine a chilly winter morning, with fresh powder blanketing the mountain as young skiers eagerly line up for their lesson. Jenka sees this as her calling, a way to “impart something I love onto the next generation.” As the kids take their first turns, guided by caring instructors, they’re not just learning to ski—they’re discovering a love for the sport and a connection to the mountains. It’s a tradition of passing on a passion that, as Jenka put it, “gets them excited about the sport. They can get out and just be in the snow and fresh air and sunshine....it’s amazing.”
For families, a day at Lookout Pass is an adventure, from the thrill of the first run to the memories made at day’s end. The day begins with a scenic drive up the mountain, followed by the excitement of bundling up for the slopes. Kids take to their lessons with eager anticipation, while parents enjoy a few solo runs, savoring the quiet beauty of the mountain. By lunchtime, families swap stories in the historic base lodge—the second oldest in the northwest—their laughter mixing with the aroma of hot chocolate. Later, in the Loft Pub, adults relax over après ski drinks and Lookout’s signature slow-cooked bratwurst as they look back on a day filled with family fun. As Lookout spokesperson Matt Sawyer says, “What makes this area different is the people, the culture...there’s a certain soul to these smaller ski areas that have a good vibe.”
Lookout Pass isn’t just about skiing; it’s about moments that stay with you long after the snow melts. It’s that pause at the top of a run, where the only sounds are the whistling wind and the crunch of snow beneath your skis. It’s watching your kids as they glide down the slopes, their cheeks rosy with joy. It’s sharing quiet “treasure it” moments with loved ones, and finding a connection to Western Montana’s wild beauty. These moments create a lasting bond to the land and to each other, reminding visitors to cherish this place so that generations to come can experience its magic, too.
