Where Montana Tradition Lives On
The ranch has been in the family for three generations, and that continuity shapes how it feels—consistent, familiar and intentionally personal. Chase grew up here and now runs the ranch, building on what his grandfather started. You see the Averill family heritage in the rhythm of the week, in staff who return year after year and in the way guests are welcomed in. A stay here isn’t just a check-in; it’s stepping into something shaped over decades.
Across nearly 2,000 acres, the ranch stretches from the lake up into the Swan Mountains, with access to even more beyond it. “You’re right next to Glacier National Park, the Bob Marshall...the ranch backs up to millions of acres of national forest,” Chase said. “It’s an endless playground.” There’s a full schedule if you want it—sailing, waterskiing, horseback riding, hiking, biking—but nothing feels forced. You can fill your day or keep it simple. Guests move between lake time and trail time, or settle into a slower pace altogether.
What makes Flathead Lake Lodge unique is the lake itself. “You don’t see that very often,” remarked Chase. “For a guest ranch, being on a lake— it’s pretty amazing.” Water is part of the daily rhythm—morning paddles, sailing lessons, afternoons spent tubing or just sitting along the shore. Even when you’re not on it, the lake is always there, shaping how the day unfolds.
“I think the whole place revolves around families.” Kids head off into wrangling, lake activities and group games while adults relax or join in, with meals bringing everyone back together—from casual breakfasts to the weekly steak fry. “For a week every year, people step out of their busy lives and slow down—it’s the best of the way things used to be.” It’s also why so many guests return. “You can see that passion for the West ignite—they let down their guard. They’re actually on vacation,” Chase said. For many, it becomes a tradition across generations. As one guest who continues to bring his children here shared: “I came as a kid. And before that even my mom and grandparents came. It’s in the blood.”
